Blergh...
...This pretty much sums up how i was feelin this morning....
My work has always been about the personal and narrative has always inspired me, howeveer recently i have noticed i have had two aspects to my work and couldnt find the middle ground or how it related...
1) vintage adverts/packaging and basically most things post war britain has always interested me and i love the aesthetics of the text used and the colours and the wording used from that era
2) The use of layering and personal imagery and text to make pieces that are all about secrets, with great meaning to me and perhaps a slight insight for people looking at them, or maybe just leaving them wondering...
so i was struggling to think how these two elements related and after a group tutorial yesterday i was feeling really deflated....i find it really hard to talk about my work, i feel a lot about it, but i don't ever seem to be able to describe this to anyone else, also... certain tutors seem to always put my work down, maybe i'm taking this too personally but saying "i dont get anything from this" is really hurtful to me, i am not naive enough to think my work is amazing and perfect, it definatly needs some development, but i feel there is so much going on with it, and a million different ways it could develop...and basically really exciting....so felt really disheartened....
ANYWAY....this morning i opened a box of old photographs my grandad had sent for me, most were old family photographs, which i love to look through, he had also sent along with this a small diary he had kept the year after he met my Gran, it really helped me today as this is something my grandad has always done, and he had written in it everyday from simple things such as "Took the dog out" to much more personal things, i didn't read anymore because i felt i shouldnt be looking, although i know he sent it on purpose. This really helped me, to realise, it doesn't all have to be so deep, the two aspects of my work can sit happily together because they all relate to me, my family and their history, so it is that simple...my work is simply autobiographical....now i have to work out what the teacup thing is all about!!
